So there is a reason this is my first blog entry... THIS APP IS AWESOME!

Maps.me will work when you have cellular data or WiFi, allowing you to access a navigational map whilst fully offline. It takes its data from OpenStreetMap, which is an open source website, meaning users can add or change data.  It’s essentially like the Wikipedia of maps!

An app for everyone...

Even for those who opt to find some form of travel sim card package on arrival (this will be covered in another post), or have a roaming package included with a current data plan, you should still have this app on your phone.

Why?

Personally, I primarily use Google Maps on a day to day basis, I love to save places I have been, pin places I am told about, remember useful places and just generally build my own personal map of the world. (I will do another post about how I utilise Google Maps soon). But there will be a time you need an offline map. With Google you can download small parts, but not an entire country or region as you can with Maps.me.

Trails and Hikes...

I love to try and get off the beaten track then I travel, and although it is not a dedicated hiking map, Maps.me has an abundance of trails and hiking routes.

Save your faves....

You can save those places people tell you about, or keep track of all the amazing spots you discover! Once you save a pin you can also generate a route to navigate your way back at a later date!

In Summary...

  • Walking directions: View hiking trails and walking maps. Find the shortest and most accurate way to your destination. Discover the world on foot!

  • Routing: Receive map directions to a specific location. Never get lost again with GPS navigation.

  • Works everywhere: Download any map for free. Useful at home and essential for travel with 345 countries and islands covered. Paris, France? Check. Amsterdam, Netherlands? Check. Barcelona, Spain? Check. New York, USA? Check! Rome, Italy? Check. London, UK? Check. Pare-Pare? Yeah, that’s Indonesia. Check!

  • Highly detailed: Offline maps just got better! There’s millions of points-of-interest (POI) to discover: search for restaurants, tourist attractions and destinations, gas/petrol stations, ATM machines, metro/ subway stations and more. Up-to-date map data is added daily by map users worldwide – www.openstreetmap.org – open-source alternative to Google Maps/GMaps and MapQuest.

  • No Internet needed: Maps work when no internet connection is available. Forget about roaming charges when travelling abroad.

  • Incredibly fast: One of the fastest off-line maps ever. Displays map when others don’t. Innovative map data compression makes Maps.me off-line maps remarkably small. Save memory on your device.
